Love him or hate him, there's no denying that Howard Stern is a marketing genius.
The stats speak for themselves: One week before Sirius released word of the Stern signing, they had 660,000 subscribers. By year end, Sirius should have a total of 6,300,000 subscribers. That's an audience as large as the State of Israel, paying a basic subscription rate of $12.95 a month.
But get this: Some "experts" say Stern's Sirius run has been a huge disappointment. After all, the man was drawing at least 12 million listeners a day on terrestrial radio, so millions of fans have stayed away, right?
I've been in direct marketing my entire adult life, and I've never come across anyone able to convert as high a percentage from free to paid in such a short period of time. I've seen businesses with lower price points that couldn't put 3% of their customers into the paid slot.
One request for Sirius brass: Please put back the all-Springsteen channel!
