Tonight, after listening to Sonny and Cher's I Got You Babe on Sirius, a thought hit me. I'd heard about that night in 1987 when the pop duo unexpectedly reunited on Late Night with David Letterman. (I was fast asleep at the time.) Was there any chance I could find the video clip on YouTube?
In under a minute, I hit paydirt. There's Cher, nervously sitting with her ex while Dave relentlessly coaxes them into performing their biggest hit. Finally, when they reluctantly walk to the microphones and Sonny gives the signal for Cher to sing first, I was back in Sylvia and Seymour Rosenthal's tiny living room in North Jersey.
The day after that impromptu performance, I read that Cher looked out while singing and saw the audience in tears. (I didn't ball but did find the clip sorta remarkable.)
With all the great TV programming available tonight, I ended up treating a dusty old video clip as Must-See TV. YouTube isn't a website. It's a TV channel for the 21st century. The $1.6 billion purchase price was a steal.
